Gorillas & Fairways

Eleven nights from the grand old clubs of Nairobi to an arm's length from a silverback — the journey almost nobody packages, done the way it deserves.

Mountain gorilla in Volcanoes National Park on the Gorillas and Fairways hosted golf safari
Why this journey

Real championship golf. The most emotional hour in travel. One trip.

Kenya carries the serious golf — Muthaiga hosts the Magical Kenya Open on the DP World Tour, Karen sits beside Karen Blixen's farm, and at the Great Rift Valley Resort, zebra graze the fairways. Rwanda carries the wonder: a Gary Player amphitheatre across the thousand hills, and the gorillas of the Virungas an hour from your lodge.

We'll be honest, as always: the Rwandan rounds are memorable for their setting, not their tournament pedigree. That's the point. Kenya is for your scorecard; Rwanda is for your soul.

Shelagh's note

Play Muthaiga or Karen on day one to find your altitude legs. Up here at a mile high the ball flies a club further — flatter, and farther than you expect.

Day by day

Eleven nights, two countries, one party.

Days 1–3Nairobi

The grand old clubs, a mile above the sea

Arrive into Nairobi and settle into leafy Karen. A round at Muthaiga — founded 1913, redesigned by Peter Matkovich, the home of Kenyan golf — and another at Karen Country Club beneath the Ngong Hills.

Rounds 1 & 2 · Muthaiga & KarenGallery: Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum, Sheldrick elephant orphanage

Stay: a country-house hotel, Karen

Days 3–6Maasai Mara

Wide gold plains, thick with cats

By light aircraft to a private conservancy bordering the Mara — off-road driving, night drives and walking, with the place practically to yourselves. Lion, leopard and cheetah; from July, the Migration's river crossings.

Two game drives dailyDawn balloon flight (optional)

Stay: a private-conservancy camp, Greater Mara

Days 6–8Lake Naivasha

Zebra on the fairways

Down into the Rift Valley to the escarpment above Lake Naivasha. A round at the Great Rift Valley Resort — the signature 17th, the 'Princess of the Rift', is pure theatre — with zebra grazing the fairways and Hell's Gate next door.

Round 3 · Great Rift ValleyBoat safari among hippo · Crescent Island walkGallery: cycling Hell's Gate gorge

Stay: Great Rift Valley Lodge, Naivasha

Days 8–11Rwanda

The thousand hills, then the gorillas

Fly to Kigali — among the cleanest, most inspiring capitals in Africa. A round at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas, the only Gary Player Signature course in East Africa, then north into the Virungas. The trek itself: misted bamboo, a family of mountain gorillas, one hour you will never adequately describe to anyone who wasn't there.

Round 4 · Kigali Golf ResortGorilla trek · Volcanoes NPGallery: golden-monkey trek or Dian Fossey hike (optional)

Stay: Kigali boutique hotel, then a Volcanoes NP lodge
