Gorilla Country

Two small, green, astonishing countries — and the most humbling hour in all of travel, an arm's length from a silverback.

The gorillas

An arm's length from a silverback, in misted bamboo

Player's only one

His sole East African design, in the heart of Kigali

Two great apes

Gorillas and chimpanzees in a single journey

The wild

The whole reason you come.

Rwanda is tiny, immaculate and inspiring; Uganda is Churchill's lush 'Pearl of Africa'. Together they hold the world's mountain gorillas, the finest chimp tracking on earth, and golf that bookends the wonder rather than competing with it. We'll be honest: come for the apes; the rounds are the civilised punctuation.

Trekkers approaching a gorilla family in bamboo

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Africa's most accessible gorilla trekking — barely three hours from Kigali, into the bamboo of the Virungas.

Chimpanzee in the Kibale canopy

Bwindi & Kibale, Uganda

Half the world's mountain gorillas in Bwindi's ancient forest, and the finest chimpanzee tracking in Africa at Kibale.

Canopy walkway above Nyungwe Forest

Nyungwe & Akagera, Rwanda

Chimps and a canopy walk above primeval rainforest; then Akagera's Big Five comeback of lakes and rolling savanna.

The golf

The rounds we'd play ourselves.

Par 72Central Kigali

Kigali Golf Resort & Villas

The only Gary Player Signature course in East Africa — an amphitheatre across the thousand hills, modern, technical and beautifully kept, in the heart of a capital the world has fallen for.

Par 72Entebbe, Uganda

Lake Victoria Serena

Uganda's premier championship course on the shore of Africa's largest lake — the country's first bent-grass greens and dazzling island greens at the 8th and 18th, ten minutes from the runway.

9 holesLake Kivu & the Virungas

The scenic nines

Falcon on Lake Muhazi, Gisenyi on Lake Kivu, the course at the Gorillas' Nest — rounds you play for the view and the story, and we'll tell you that plainly.

Shelagh's note

Book the gorilla permit the moment you commit — they're capped each day and gone months ahead. Bookend the trek with a round in Kigali; your legs will thank you for the gentler day.

Good questions

Asked before you booked

How much is a gorilla permit and is it included?

Rwanda's gorilla trekking permit costs US$1,500 per person per trek and is included in all our Rwanda journey prices. Permits are limited to 96 per day across the whole park, so booking early genuinely matters.

Is Rwanda safe?

Rwanda is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in Africa — Kigali is immaculate, orderly and welcoming. Guests consistently tell us it upended every expectation they arrived with.

Do I need a visa for Rwanda?

Rwanda grants a visa on arrival to citizens of every country in the world — one of the easiest entries in Africa. A 30-day tourist visa is issued at the airport.

Can my non-golfing partner come?

Absolutely — while the golfers play, our Gallery programme runs parallel experiences: game drives, spas, wine, walks and markets, reunited for lunch or sundowners. Non-golfers never sit out a day.

How do I get an exact price?

Open any journey and choose Price a Private Version — adjust the nights, keep or drop rounds and experiences, tell us who is travelling, and our quoting engine returns an exact private price, checked by a specialist, usually within one working day.

Are the hotel names confirmed?

Yes — every itinerary on this site names its exact properties, hand-picked from our register of fifty-two. None paid for, none reciprocated.

Tell us how you want to feel when you come home.

We'll build the wild, and the golf, around that — and nothing else.
